Raspberry Pi 5 Specifications

The latest iteration of the popular Raspberry Pi single-board computer brings noteworthy upgrades in processing power, graphics, and connectivity. Dubbed the Raspberry Pi 5, this new model packs a punch with its quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 central processing unit (CPU). Benchmark tests demonstrate this new CPU performs up to three times faster than its predecessor in the Raspberry Pi 4.

Another major boost comes from the upgraded VideoCore VII graphics processing unit (GPU), which renders graphics twice as fast as before. This enables the Raspberry Pi 5 to smoothly run two 4K resolution displays at 60 frames per second. Such capabilities open up more opportunities for multimedia and gaming applications.

Connectivity gets an upgrade as well with the inclusion of two USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports. Gigabit Ethernet ensures speedy wired networking while the two four-lane MIPI transceivers allow connecting high-resolution cameras and displays. Enthusiasts can attach bandwidth-hungry PCIe and NVMe devices using the single lane of PCIe support.

Raspberry Pi’s product team has added some new conveniences too like an integrated power button and a real-time clock to maintain time even when powered off. The Pi 5 enters mass production in October 2022 and is now available for pre-order starting at $60 for the 4GB RAM model and $80 for the 8GB version.

Owners of previous Raspberry Pi models should note that the changed port layout requires new cases customized for the Raspberry Pi 5. Production takes place in Sony’s Pencoed facility in South Wales, UK, continuing Raspberry Pi’s legacy of local manufacturing. With its revamped internals and thoughtfully designed interfaces, the Raspberry Pi 5 raises the bar for single-board computing.
