How to Deactivate or Delete Your Twitter Account

Twitter offers two options for users who want to remove their account: deactivating or deleting.

StepActionDescription
1Log in to TwitterVisit Twitter.com and sign in to your account using your username/email and password.
2Access SettingsOn a computer: Click the “More” icon (three dots) in the left sidebar, then select “Settings and privacy.” On the mobile app: Tap your profile picture, then tap “Settings and privacy.”
3Go to Account SettingsOn a computer: Click “Your account” from the options on the left. On the mobile app: Tap “Account” under your username.
4Choose DeactivationScroll down and select “Deactivate your account.”
5Read InformationCarefully read the information about deactivation and deletion.
6Confirm DeactivationClick or tap “Deactivate” to proceed.
7Enter PasswordEnter your Twitter password when prompted.
8Final ConfirmationClick or tap “Deactivate” again to confirm your decision.
9Wait for 30 Days (Optional)If you wish to permanently delete your account, do not log in to Twitter for 30 days after deactivation. After this period, your account will be permanently deleted.

Key Points to Remember while Deactivating or Deleting a Twitter Account

  • Deactivation is temporary: It hides your profile and tweets, but you can reactivate within 30 days by simply logging back in.
  • Deletion is permanent: After 30 days of deactivation, your account and data will be permanently removed.
  • Download your data: If you want to save your tweets, photos, or other data, download your Twitter archive before deactivating.
  • Alternative options: Consider using Twitter’s privacy settings to control who can see your tweets and activity, instead of deactivating.

Deactivating temporarily disables the account, and the user’s data is retained for 30 days before it’s permanently deleted.

Deleting removes the account and all associated data immediately, and it can’t be undone

To deactivate, users must log in to their account on the Twitter website, go to Settings and Privacy, then click on Deactivate Account at the bottom of the page

Users can reactivate their account within 30 days by logging back in, otherwise it will be permanently deleted

To delete, users must submit a request via Twitter’s account deactivation page, then wait for an email with further instructions

The email will include a link to confirm the deletion request, and users have 30 days to click it before the request expires

Users should be aware that deleting their account also permanently deletes their tweets, followers, and other account data

It’s recommended that users download a copy of their Twitter data before deactivating or deleting their account, which includes their tweets, direct messages, and other account information

Twitter also advises users to consider deactivating instead of deleting if they’re unsure, as it allows them to return to the platform later without losing their data

The process for deactivating or deleting a Twitter account is similar across different platforms, such as the Twitter mobile app.

If you wish to deactivate or delete your Twitter account, there are a few steps you can follow. Firstly, log in to your Twitter account and click on the “More” option located on the left-hand side of the screen. From there, select “Settings and Privacy” and then navigate to the “Account” tab. Scroll down until you find the “Deactivate your account” option and click on it. Twitter will then provide you with some information about the deactivation process.

If you’re certain about deactivating your account, click on the “Deactivate” button and follow the prompts to confirm your decision. Keep in mind that deactivating your account will temporarily disable it, allowing you to reactivate it at any time by simply logging back in. However, if you want to permanently delete your account, you need to follow a different process. After deactivating your account, wait for 30 days, during which Twitter will retain your data. If you don’t log back in within this period, your account will be permanently deleted along with all associated data.
