A recently discovered fraudulent activity has emerged on the widely-used messaging platform, WhatsApp. Scammers are using the name of the caller ID app, Truecaller, to make hoax calls to international numbers, leading to high call charges for the victim.
The scam involves a call being made to the victim from an international number. When the victim answers the call, the scammer pretends to be a representative of Truecaller and asks the victim to verify their account by sharing a one-time password (OTP) that they will receive via SMS. Once the victim shares the OTP, the scammer can take control of their Truecaller account and use it to make hoax calls to other international numbers, leading to high call charges for the victim.
Truecaller has issued a statement warning its users to be cautious of such calls and to never share their OTP or any personal information with anyone. The company has also stated that it never asks for OTPs or any other sensitive information from its users.
This scam is a reminder of the importance of being cautious while sharing personal information, especially in the era of digital frauds. It is essential to verify the authenticity of any call or message before sharing sensitive information like OTPs or passwords. Users should always double-check with the concerned company or individual before sharing any personal information.
